Over the last 4 decades, HIV has remained a public health challenge. The development of antiretroviral therapy has significantly improved patient outcomes by reducing morbidity and mortality. Despite healthcare advances, new cases continue to occur each year. Healthcare professionals deliver treatment, education and advocacy for those living with HIV.

  • 1) Identify populations most affected by HIV
  • 2) Explain the primary modes of HIV transmission and what increases risk of transmission
  • 3) Differentiate HIV screening recommendations from diagnostic and monitoring testing
  • 4) Identify current evidence based treatment strategies for HIV, including the role of antiretroviral therapy (ART), treatment initiation, adherence, and monitoring of viral load and CD4 count
  • 5) Apply evidence-based HIV prevention strategies to reduce the risk of HIV acquisition and transmission, including PrEP, PEP, safer sex practices, and treatment as prevention/U = U
